Uncontrolled trade with ferrous scrap brings a danger of radiation exposure for every body
By Natasha Crvenkovska
The ferrous scrap is becoming one of the most required products in the Balkan region, and only during the latest years in Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo are opened more than thousand purchase centers. Mostly, ferrous scrap is gathered from the regions exposed almost for two decades to military actions and influence of the radioactive material from the bombs with depleted uranium.
Among numerous organized mafia groups operating in the region of Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo for more than two decades, we know the least for so called “nuclear lobby or nuclear mafia”.
Destroyed factories, military and civil installations, railroads, bridges and other infrastructure being targeted during the war, now have turn into dangerous radio active material spread through the region which was for a long time occupied by the war conflict.
These objects become secondary raw material collected mostly by the socially endangered groups and Roma minority, and end in some of the previously mentioned purchase centers.
But, during my investigation I’ve discovered that this is not the only danger. Countries from the region like Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo aware of the danger threatening their population due to collected radio active material from various sources, try to export it through suspicious and newly established companies for purchase and trade with secondary raw materials, better said to smuggle it to some of the neighboring countries where there is a big demand for ferrous scrap.
